Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, and entrepreneur. She rose to prominence in 1990 with her eponymous debut album. 

Carey is the only artist in history to have their first five singles become top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, from “Vision of Love” to “I’ll Be There”. 

As of 2020, she has sold more than 300 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. 

In addition to her commercial success, Carey has earned five Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards, and 31 Billboard Music Awards. 

She is often referred to as the “Queen of Christmas” for her holiday music, including her signature song “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, which has appeared on multiple best-selling holiday albums.

Early Life and Career

Mariah was born in Huntington, New York on March 27, 1970. Her mother, Patricia Carey (née Hickey), is an Irish-American former opera singer and voice coach. 

Her father, Alfred Roy Carey, was an African American/Venezuelan aeronautical engineer who died in a plane crash when Mariah was three years old. 

After their father’s death, Patricia moved the family to Greenlawn, New York where Carey and her brothers Albany and Morgan were raised Catholic. 

Carey began singing in church choirs at a young age and by age four she had begun composing her own songs. When she was nine years old, her parents got divorced and she moved with them back to Huntington. 

Around this time she began attending Harborfields High School where she took part in several school productions including The Wiz and Grease. After graduating high school in 1987, Carey pursued a career in music and sang backup vocals for Lou Rawls before securing a record deal with Columbia Records in 1988. 

Commercial Success

Carey’s self-titled debut album was released in June 1990 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. 

The album spawned five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; “Vision of Love”, “Love Takes Time”, “Someday”, “I Don’t Wanna Cry”, and “Emotions”. 

Setting several records for a female artist at the time of its release, the album remains one of the most successful debut albums by a solo artist ever released. In 1991, Carey won two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Vision of Love.”

It made her the first artist ever to have their first five singles become top ten hits on the Hot 100 chart.
