Story of Tina Turner

Tina’s Early Life

Tina was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee, on November 26, 1939. Her mother, Zelma Currie, was a factory worker, and her father, Floyd Richard Bullock, was a farmhand.

Tina had a difficult childhood; her parents were frequently abusive, and she was forced to drop out of school in the ninth grade to help support her family.

When she was 18 years old, Tina married fellow musician Ike Turner; the pair would go on to have a son named Ronald.

The Ike & Tina Turner Review

Ike and Tina formed the Ike & Tina Turner Review in 1960. The group quickly found success with their cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary.”

The Review became known for their energetic live shows, which often featured Tina performing daring feats such as doing handstands or splits while singing.

The group released a string of hit singles throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including “Nutbush City Limits” and “River Deep – Mountain High.”

Tina’s Solo Career

In 1976, after several years of domestic abuse from Ike, Tina finally divorced him and struck out on her own as a solo artist. She released her debut solo album that same year, titled “Tina Turns the Country On!”

Although the album was not commercially successful, it did contain one of Tina’s most iconic songs: “Nutbush City Limits.” In 1984, Tina enjoyed a huge comeback with her album “Private Dancer,” which contained the smash hit single “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”
