How to Play Happy Birthday Song on Piano

To start:

  1. Find those two notes on your keyboard.

  2. For the C Major chord, press down the white keys A, C, and E simultaneously with your left hand (or right hand if you’re a lefty).

  3. Use your left hand for the F Major chord and press down E, A, and C.

Once you have found those chords with both hands, place your thumbs on the third notes of each chord (E for C major; A for F major).

Now that your thumbs are in place, use your other fingers (index through pinky) to hit each note of the chord in order from the bottom up like this: first finger (index) – third note – second finger (middle) – second note – third finger (ring) – first note. Then repeat this pattern until you reach your thumb again.

This is called “arpeggiating” or “playing broken chords,” and it will give you an excellent sound while playing “Happy Birthday.”

Once you get comfortable with that pattern, try adding some syncopation or playing with different rhythms. You can also try experimenting with different octaves or using more complex chords for added texture. Just use your imagination and have fun!
